Castanospermum Australe – Moreton Bay Chestnut

Quirky and contemporary, the Moreton Bay Chestnut is admired for the way in which it sprouts up from the chestnut at the soil surface. An umbrella of long, sleek, glossy leaves canopies the slender spotted stems, giving this mini tropical tree an exotic aesthetic.

Reaching outdoor heights of 40 metres, this plant can be controlled indoors to the desired size and shape, giving you the opportunity to create your own interior potted forest.

Horty Hints

The bigger the pot! If you want a large leafy display, re-pot it into a bigger pot. If you prefer smaller and more compact, leave it as is.

Dust-free and delightful! Keep leaves dust-free with a damp cloth and water. The bigger the tree, the more dust builds up.

Too top heavy! – If your plant becomes too long and leggy (can’t support itself) cut it back to the desired height in the spring. This will cause it to bush out.

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate some light shade but may become leggy. Keep away from direct sunlight as this may scorch the leaves.

Watering

Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, but not soggy, at all times. Allow to drain thoroughly when watering. Water when the soil feels slightly dry to the touch.

Temperature

Normal household temperatures between 18-24°C but can tolerate lows of 10°C at a push. Avoid cold draughts.

Humidity

Prefers above normal household humidity levels, however, will tolerate some lower levels with regular weekly misting.

Feed

Apply a weak solution of liquid fertiliser twice a month during the growing season.
